Expectations from Genders Patricia Stark May 6, 2015 Argosy University Psychology of Gender | PSY313 A01 Dr. Jennifer Levitas Sternberg’s triangular theory of love Robert Sternberg’s theory of love is best explained in the context of interpersonal relationships. An interpersonal relationship can be defined as two or more people who have a strong, deep or close association. The three components Sternberg uses are intimacy, passion and commitment. His theory uses 6 manifestations which are combinations of the three components. This covers a variety of different kinds of relationships in human kind. Today in the real world, relationships aren’t that cut and dry. Different genders, cultures, religions, race, and ethnicity all play a role in relationships that pertain to Sternberg’s theory of love, the three components and the 6 manifestations he talks about. I think women have can have many of these relationships over time. Empty love, many women stay in a marriage where they don’t even like their spouse, usually because there is some kind of abuse going on. The friendship, women are more intimate with friends and confide in their friends making it a more intimate relationship. In old age companionate love is common, although there may not be much intimacy, th ere is love and commitment, making it a fulfilling relationship. Of course everyone is different so this is only my opinion. The relationship between mother and child is usually the strongest relationship a woman can have in my eyes. There is no more commitment, love, compassion, and fulfillment in life than the bond in this relationship. The Spectrum of Sacrifice in The Kite Runner and the Last...

In the fantasy novel, The Last Unicorn, Peter S. Beagle wrote that â€Å"Real magic can never be made by offering someone elses liver. You must tear out your own, and not expect to get it back† (Beagle). While this quote is a bizarre non sequitur, its core holds true. It states that the only sacrifice that is truly worth anything is the sacrifice of one’s self. Too often in this age, people step on others to help themselves succeed, gain prestige and positions for themselves while leaving those stepped on in the dust. In 2003, Khaled Hosseini wrote The Kite Runner, which explores the same theme of self-sacrifice and love. It follows the life of Amir, a rich Pashtu boy, who spends his childhood in Afghanistan with his father, Baba and his†¦show more content†¦Baba immediately stands up and tells the soldier to leave her alone. The soldier then threatens to shoot Baba, to which Baba replies â€Å"‘[you’d] better kill me good with that first shot. Be cause if I don’t go down, I’m tearing [you] to pieces [†¦]’† (Hosseini 123). Fortunately for Amir, the soldier’s superior calls the soldier off and Baba survives the encounter, but the act resonates with the reader: Baba is willing to sacrifice his life for others. A smaller example of his self-sacrifice is the orphanage that Baba had built before the start of novel. Baba is a wealthy man, and presumably it did not make to large an impact on his riches, but he went out of his way to build an orphanage simply because it was the right thing to do. Baba’s love of humanity in general inspired him to sacrifices quite a lot to make the world a better place. While Baba is a large presence in the novel, the most prominent character in respect to self-sacrifice is Hassan, Amir’s servant and illegitimate half-brother. Very early on in the book, Amir describes Hassan as â€Å"incapable of hurting anyone† (Hosseini 11), and Hassan lives up to that nature. Hassan hurts nothing and no one, taking what is given to him without any complaint. Our senses nourish our brain like food feeds our body, without their input our brains would be very hollow and lacking of knowledge (Kirby Goodpaster, 2007). For knowledge we heavily rely on what we perceive from our senses, as they provide first-hand experiences, giving us primary evidence on surroundings and situations. However human’s five senses touch, taste, sight, sound and smell also have their imitations, so therefore they each have weaknesses to the amount of accuracy of knowledge they can give. However beliefs from sight vary from person to person as we perceive things differently. An example of this would be the fact there was a time when people believed the earth was flat, as that was how it appeared as people could see the distant horizon as a straight line, it was only when the few thought otherwise went forth to prove against this knowledge that they were able to open new vistas of reality through their vision. Hearing, another sense has also been important for the use of human survival as a way of hearing unusual sounds that may stand for danger and for communication through language. However, human hearing can be limited, as often scientists find the existence or presence of sounds we cannot hear through our own ears. A human hearing deteriorates through age, as sensitivity towards sounds of higher frequency is lost. However our hearing is sophisticated enough that we can organize the sounds we hear, grouping and segregating these factors so in one aspect we hear what we want to hear. Sounds can also be interpreted or misinterpreted by different people as they stimulate varied emotions. As we generally connect the sounds we hear back to our memory, meaning we can recognize a person with a distinguishable voice. The sense of smell is important and is often used subconsciously for instinctual reasons. As recently discovered the extent to which the smell of a partner can affect our attraction to them. Our perceptions and evaluations others are influenced by their smell, as unpleasant smells connect to our disgusts or negative opinion of another. However, the perception of what is a good or bad smell can be interpreted differently between people as it is attached to previous knowledge gained. Knowledge, justification and critical thinking are three factors that contribute to the accuracy of sensory data (Mohanan, 2000). Critical thinking is the mental process of reflecting upon something to assess its credibility, truth, significance, usefulness, value or goodness on the basis of information available to us and a mode of justification that we consider legitimate. Critical thinking, knowledge and justification support the accuracy of information that our senses feed our brain. What we call knowledge is a collection of propositions that we believe to be true. A knowledge claim becomes part of the knowledge for an individual when the claim is accepted as true. Justification involves providing reasons for accepting propositions that we regards as knowledge, that is, for considering them to be true. It also involved providing reasons for rejecting the propositions that we regard as non-knowledge, considering them to be false. In other words, justification involves the defense of what we regards as true, and the refutation of what we regard as false. Observations, generalizations and theories are strategies of justification when using the senses as a viable way of gaining knowledge. Psychologists have long debated if perception is in fact due to nature or nurture. Beginning from the view point of nature, Gibson’s bottom up/direct theory that all the information we need to perceive is provided by our visual environment e. g. nature, rather than having to use past knowledge or experience (Mace, 2005). Additionally, Gibson and Gibson later proposed their Differentiation Theory which explains how the innate system develops. They suggested when young, we lack the ability to differentiate between objects. However, as we get older we develop the ability to differentiate, for this to take place all the necessary information needed is found is our visual environment. Next, from the view point that perception is a processes of nurture comes from Gregory’s top down/indirect theory which suggest that often the perceptual sensory data we receive is ambiguous and impoverished so perception often relies on the construction of sensory data, stored knowledge and expectations (McLeod, 2007). Research would suggest that although some argue that perception is due to nature, while other argues for nurture, it may in fact be that the two factors are interdependent and rely on each other. After all, it would be most adaptive to be born with some ‘hard wired systems’ which can be pruned and then developed to suit our environment. The human senses have enough strength to enable us to survive and develop our knowledge of our surrounding world to a point a point which we feel comfortable. Each sense has its limitations as well as its capability to be influenced by our inherited preferences, memories or previous knowledge. The senses an also be influenced by certain human states as tiredness, drug/alcohol abuse, nutritional deficiencies are all detrimental to the sensitivity of senses causing us to perceive something mistakenly. Florida State First Impression Essay When I decided to come to Florida State, surprisingly enough it wasnt for the parties. I was actually excited about coming here and studying (dont ask me why). Every other school I looked at I judged them according to how much of a party school they were and what the girls looked like. Then I end up at the #1 party school with a 5:1 ratio of girls to guys. In fact when I came here I wasnt even planning on rushing a Fraternity. When I got here though it was a whole different story. I can remember the week before school started, walking down the hall of my dorm and seeing newspaper clippings on all the doors. After a few days I got curious and decided to read one of them. It was an article about how our University was named the #1 party school for 1999-2000. The last time we had this title was in 1996. Our school has ranked in the top five biggest party schools four times in the last six years, and in 1996 it was ranked #1. For those first one or two weeks of school, everyone was making a big deal about it. I even saw it brought up on MTV News, and Comedy Central. Both shows were ripping on Sandy DAlemberte about the comments he had tried to make to save the face of his school. His comments about the title were that it was unfair because it was not done in any type of scientifically correct manner. Another one of his arguments was that an interviewer from the Princeton Review had not been to the campus since 1997 so there was no definite way that they could have information from students about the present social life at the school. The only information the media had to judge this on was feedback they got from student surveys, which are not the most dependable way to get information. So how exactly is this title decided? Does someone go around to different parties and decide it based on how good the parties are? Is it decided by the number of kegs bought in a set amount of time in Tallahassee? Maybe its judged by polls that ask how often each student here has sex. Its hard to tell. From what I see I dont think we party any more than other colleges that Ive been to. Granted some people party more than others and some fraternities party harder than others do. But as a whole I do not think that that FSU should be considered the #1 party school in the country. If its based on the ranking of our football team then that would be a different story. If that were the case then it wouldnt give our university such a bad reputation. Right now though we have a reputation that the students like because it makes them look like a bunch of hard ass partiers. But the graduates dont really like it because they know that their possible employers know about that reputation and probably look down on hiring someone who is a party animal. The thing that sucks the most about it is for those people who dont really party that much like my roommate. He hates having that name because he has never had a sip of alcohol in his life. But when he tells people that he goes to FSU they immediately smile and ask him some question like, how many beers can you drink in one hour? Personally I dont really care about being known as a party animal. I will admit that I probably party a lot more than I really should. Especially being in a fraternity, there are always parties that I can go to. Unfortunately though, it is beginning to have an impact on my studies even though I have to go to mandatory study hours with Kappa Alpha. I am going to have to disagree with the magazines and newspapers when they say that the students of Florida State are nothing but a bunch of drunken slobs.
